3 Tips to Tidying Up Your Space for Spring

Posted by Anni Stromfeld on

Remember when the internet was raving about Marie Kondo and tidying up your space to spark joy? Well, we’re firm believers in this mentality!

Feeling comfortable in your space is key - especially, where space is limited and organizing our environments can have positive impacts, both physically and mentally.

According to Marie Kondo, the author of “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up,” tidying up is an essential and life-changing endeavor.

Here are three tips from her incredible book to help you start spring-cleaning your space:

Tidy Up With Intent

Stop thinking of cleaning as a chore that we HAVE to do. Many of you view cleaning as a chore or a means of procrastination.

Instead we should be able to view cleaning as its own entity. In Kondo’s book she sheds a different light on tidying up where she highlights that if we tidy with intent the process feels differently.

Being present and aware while tidying versus mindlessly going about it changes our relationship to the activity.

Additionally when we live with more intention, we are deliberately making the choice to do it. We want you to start seeing spring-cleaning as a means of freeing up space, both internally and externally!

Tidy Up With Determination

In Kondo’s book, she encourages her clients to visualize their destination prior to starting their tidying journey. She asks them what they want their space to look like and how they want to feel when there! We love this technique.

It’s true that our living spaces affect our bodies and minds, thus it is important to be thoughtful about how we shape them. Rather than tidying up a little bit each day, Kondo recommends using the “destination” as motivation to set a designated amount of time in which to achieve this.

Tidy Up With One Simple Step

The first step to tidying in Kondo’s books, is that you must discard items from your space BEFORE cleaning.

This is her advice:

  • Focus on what you want to keep, not what you want to remove.
  • Assess each item based on the pleasure and joy it brings you.
  • You want your space to be filled with items you LOVE.

It’s important to let go of items because it can be challenging and cathartic. This is a crucial step that you need to take! Discarding items will leave you and your space with less clutter and more items that you truly value. Which in turn will help you in creating more simplicity in your space and mind!
